Ralph enlisted in the army at the tender young age of 18 when the US joined WWII. He trained as a pilot and became a "hump" pilot in 1944. He flew more missions (120) between India and China-over the Himalayan mountains- than any other American pilot. He was promoted to captain and received two Air Medals and the Distinguished Flying Cross for his war efforts.
He survived all of the dangers of war and made it home. But he still served his country, flying planes to the "graveyard." Less than a year after the war ended, he died tragically in a P-51 when his plane crashed in a field outside of Omaha, Nebraska.
